John Stevens Henslow was a British botanist and geologist, best known as a mentor to Charles Darwin. His scientific work and teaching made him an influential figure in the natural sciences in the 19th century. The illustrations that Henslow made or supervised are characterized by clean lines and a precise depiction of plant features. He paid particular attention to the anatomical details of leaves, flowers, and seeds, which were often depicted schematically and with scientific accuracy in his work. This approach made his drawings indispensable tools for botanical research and study. Many of his drawings also show multiple specimens of the same species to highlight differences in shape, size, and structure. This innovative approach was groundbreaking for the time.
